I am a big fan of grunge, alt. The band along with The Pixies are considered few of the bands to help with the alternative rock boom that exploded in the 90s. Without a doubt the band is pushed by J Mascis. A name that comes straight to mind when one thinks of the band. His guitar work is extraordinary, barraged by loads of distortion and plenty of wah. The Lung. In a Jar. Lou Barlow. Just Like Heaven. Little Fury Things J Mascis. Spotify Amazon.

The album was originally issued when the band were still known as Dinosaur, before a lawsuit forced the name change to Dinosaur Jr. The album was recalled by SST a few months after release, and new copies were printed crediting the band as Dinosaur Jr. The album is considered a classic of indie and alternative rock. In , it was ranked 31 in Spin ' s list of the greatest albums from through to [15] Pitchfork Media placed the album at number 40 in their list of "Top Albums of the s.

The album has also proved to be massively influential, especially on the then-nascent shoegazing genre. All tracks are written by J Mascis , except as noted. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Dinosaur Jr.

A sample of "Sludgefeast", the third track from the album. Retrieved Retrieved October 3, The Austin Chronicle. Entertainment Weekly. Retrieved June 17, Although the hardcore punk influences were noticeably more muted than on Dinosaur, the overall sound was much more powerful, with the instruments often recorded very loud and with considerable amounts of distortion.

While J's guitar, alternating between Black Sabbath-like riffs, squalling solos, dissonant noise-rock and occasional quiet passages, was the main attraction, Lou's bass, melodic, highly distorted and often playing thick two-note chords, competed for attention. Meanwhile, Murph played the drum parts composed by J in a very heavy and powerful fashion, resulting in a unique version of the standard power trio format.

J did most of the lead singing, using a detached drawl that presented a contrast with the extreme music. The songs were highly melodic albeit with odd song structures that avoided the typical verse-chorus-verse patterns of most rock and pop songs.

Lou also composed two songs: the hardcore-influenced "Lose" and an acoustic sonic collage entitled "Poledo" that anticipated his work with his folk-based side project Sebadoh. And it was after the release of You're Living All Over Me that the band was sued over the use of the name Dinosaur and subsequently added the "Jr. The original SST-released version of the album contained only nine songs, ending on the slightly-out-of-character "Poledo," which, oddly enough, served rather well as an ending for such a heavy album.

When Merge reissued the album, they added the band's cover of the Cure classic "Just Like Heaven" to close out the album. Their version of the song is unique in that it cuts out completely after , even though the average running time of the song is This move is far less bold than Merge's choice top include a poorly-recorded live track like they did to close out their reissue of the band's debut record. The recordings on that album far outstrip the quality of the live version on "Does It Float" added to Dinosaur!

This is perfectly, imperfectly delivered guitar rock, with a pop sensibility glistening under the scuzzy and grime of J' s distorted, whammy bar, guitar wizardry. I think this is better than Bug, but not as great as Green Mind. If you love guitar albums, like Raw Power by the Stooges, Loveless or any other album with guitar kicking everything else's ass than this an album for you. The great thing though is the album is actually fantastically catchy at times.

Just listen to album opener "Little Fury Things" or the verse on "Sludgefeast," or the chorus of "Kracked" or basically anything else on the album, except for "Poledo" which still rules in a more odd type of way. Make sure to get the Merge Reissue if you are a fan of their cover of "Just Like Heaven" and well-written liner notes. Format: Vinyl Verified Purchase. I bought this on a whim and I am so stoked. Grungy, edgy, with pop and punk, you kind of see how Nirvana and grunge all warped off this style.

Really a great record to just chill and listen too. Nice c-d. Thank you. Must listen for fans of Pixies. Grimy, sludgy, and depressing. In all the good ways. Must listen for fans of Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Nirvana.

My point is that you should start getting interested in bands outside your little circle of 80's metal. Those are just a few non-eighties-metal bands I enjoy, off the top of my head. Well, little do you know I've been working on that quite a bit as of late. The main reason I have no interest in this is I have too much other stuff I currently want to look into.

So, there. I don't like Green Mind. I like the review though. I could see how you would think otherwise, though. One's mood is difficult to read over the internet. It's satisfying seeing people get out their little metal circles. MM8, why don't you listen to this album? I'll have to check this band out, though I've only seen their newer stuff around. It's not entertaining anymore. It's probably just me, though. Dinosaur Jr. You're Living All Over Me 5. Review Summary: Besides from the production and J's voice, this is absolute essential stuff.
