We thought it would be good to get out of Austin and hole up somewhere so we could just focus on writing music for what would be our third album. We knew our way around Midland three of us grew up there and the rent was cheap. Also, there is not a whole lot to do there so there would be few distractions. Once there, we spent our days apart Michael got a job at a video store, Munaf at a Thai restaurant, Mark did some freelance copy editing and Chris walked his dog through abandoned parking lots.

Late in the evening we would get something to eat and then head to practice. We had a practice space in the basement of an old downtown office building which was quite possibly haunted. We could be there from 9pm to 6am. We put up some Christmas lights and got to work. The first couple of weeks were pretty rough.

We were having trouble coming up with anything that we liked. It was frustrating and we became rather discouraged. One night we decided to take a break and we drove out to the Monahans Sand Dunes, a few miles outside of Midland.

This place is hard to describe. You're just surrounded by weird, untouched desert. And you can see all the stars in the sky. Michael once described it as "like being on another planet. For some reason this made us feel better about things. The next night we were back in the basement practice space working on new songs. We can't remember if it got any easier or any less frustrating but somehow everything started to fall into place.

A few weeks later we packed up and moved back to Austin. Tags rock Austin. La Riviera. La Cigale. Electronic Folk International. Jazz Latin New Age. Aggressive Bittersweet Druggy. Energetic Happy Hypnotic. Romantic Sad Sentimental.

Sexy Trippy All Moods. Drinking Hanging Out In Love. The digital version that I had previously was mastered well, so I don't think there's a huge advantage to listening to it on vinyl, sonically, but the experience of playing it on vinyl is wonderful. Love it. There's something about this album that is very relatable regarding its portrayal of love and loss that I think makes it completely timeless. It's probably worth a purchase just for "Your Hand in Mine" alone with it's beautiful build ups and tear downs that perfectly describe what pure, untainted love actually feels like with as honest of an outlook as any song.

This album will most definitely cause the listener to reminisce of certain memories or think of certain people; and that is something that most albums cannot do so emphatically, consistently, and universally.

In short, this album is an experience like no other and really is a must-listen. Some people don't "get it" and that's fine. But this music is a perfect example of why life is worth living, why existence can be beautiful in addition to terrible, and how incredible humans can be. I honestly believe my life is better having heard this album. And I haven't just heard it -- I've "learned" it, in the sense that I've listened to it straight through dozens and dozens of times giving it my undivided attention.

I recommend doing the same -- really pay attention, just listen. Their songwriting and vision is very intricate and well-crafted, and their creativity is first-rate. I've put this on through headphones and just walked around during a beautiful fall day in Colorado, listening to the whole thing straight through, alone with my thoughts and this music. I feel very lucky to be able to do this.

I also feel lucky to have seen them live this past fall in Denver. These guys are true musicians, and they work extremely hard and put on an excellent show. My life has been enriched by seeing them in concert and hearing their albums, especially this one. I wish I could thank them in person for affecting my life so heavily. This music can be "hard" for some people, in the sense that it takes some effort to crack the nut and enjoy, so to speak.

I personally liked it instantly, but the more I listen to it the more I love it. I first heard this in , but after seeing them live I'm obsessed with it again this many years later.

It ages well, I guess! Buy it and learn it, it's worth it on so many levels and it just keeps giving and enriching my life. How many things can one really say that about? Not many, sadly It's a rare gem in a world full of disappointing dirty rubbish, and it has brought me to tears more times than I can remember.

My brain and heart soak it up like a tree soaks up sunlight. Phonosynthesis perhaps? OK I'll stop rambling, I think you know how I feel about this album by now. See all customer reviews. There's a problem loading this menu right now.

They don't have songs that repeat or sound the same, or at least, I don't think so. I think what they do do is adhere to a certain theme and they stick with it throughout their music, with a great level of creativity that becomes apparent the more you listen to it. I like that. I like it because it shows me that this band knows who they are and they know the kinds of sounds they want to make, which is seemingly simple, yet still very dynamic just the same.

Not only that but the name of their songs also gives off the impression of some kind of storytelling. And it's great because every story has a conflict and conflict resolution with a climatic scene somewhere towards the end that completes the whole story and that's a beautiful thing. I don't care if people don't think what I've said was relevant because I know I appreciate the band and thoroughly enjoy their music very much. True fans would understand how great Explosions in the Sky is and that doesn't necessarily mean you have to have the right words or know the right things to say to show how much you value such amazing artists and their works.

I guess what I am trying to say in all of this is that you just have to listen to them, give them a chance, to see if you can learn to love the band as much as I do. And if you don't like them, then that's okay too. This album really is that good, enough for me to write about it in such an earnest manner.

Full disclosure: I am not particularly knowledgeable about music. I bought this album after hearing songs from it on Pandora. If a song captures my attention while I'm working so that I click over to see the band and learn more about it, I will usually buy it.

I work in a noisy, hectic space so the music I listen to is mostly to drown out noise. That I might like it is secondary. Aggressive Bittersweet Druggy. Energetic Happy Hypnotic.
