Whatever the benefits of using this beautiful music for meditation, I can tell you that it's just marvellous for listening to! The CD is a collection of solos, duets and one trio, mainly dominated by the sweet clarinet of Tony Scott and the koto. Shakuhachi is also here, but to a lesser extent than the other instruments.

For some of the finest shakuhachi playing you'll here, do a search for Riley Lee on Amazon The disc comes in an elegant digipak with a very informative booklet. This is haunting music which - to my western ears - sounds at once alien and also familiar. It's not a long disc by today's standards, but don't be put off by that.

After stints at Juilliard and in the Army during the '40s, clarinetist Tony Scott rose to prominence in the '50s as a respected jazz soloist. In addition to these sidemen dates, Scott also cut several solo albums. His subtle phrasing eventually found a perfect niche in the smattering of meditation and yoga dates he cut in the mid-'60s for Verve. Fueled by his burgeoning interest in Far Eastern culture, Scott hooked up with two Japanese master instrumentalists for this classic date. And while Scott , koto player Shinichi Yuize , and shakuhachi player Hozan Yamamoto produce nine cuts that sound classically Japanese and really nothing like jazz, they do actually improvise pretty much throughout the entire set.

If you'd like to levitate to music with some unexpected twists, then Scott 's Music for Zen Meditation is for you. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to use the site fully.

This is haunting music which - to my western ears - sounds at once alien and also familiar. It's not a long disc by today's standards, but don't be put off by that. Every note is in the right place and it would have been a dreadful error to add "bonus tracks" that broke the mood. Highly recommended! The CD title is silly, the song titles too for that matter, but this is a great CD. I've listened to it for years. Like a lot of practictioners, silence is the only meditation music for me.

I'm sure there are those who like music in the background, who knows. What matters is that the music on this disc sets a standard that's not been equalled in New Age music.

Tony Scott's jazz background gives him a rare originality and freedom, and these players find an authentic musical unity in a disc of rare improvisation. Koto master Shinichi Yuize and shakuhachi player Hozan Yamamoto share full measure in making a lasting recording that never tires, and asks nothing it doesnt return ten fold.

Once you hear this recording, you'll want it always nearby. It's a real treat. From start to finish, this disc creates a perfect zen mood.

From a jazz clarinetist?! Tony Scott recorded this in the early 60's in Japan and nailed it. Music for Zen Meditation and Other Joys could easily be in current playlists of any ambient music program today.

Great music and CD was in perfect condition. One person found this helpful. This is the most beautiful, unadorned-ly pure Zen meditation music I have ever heard. Good CD. This is absolutely one of the finest works of music for meditation and spiritual work that has ever been released. It is also very nice for traditional Japanese music. I am excited to see the remastered work on CD.

The tranquility of the music has the ability to transport one's mental focus to higher planes of consciousness, and open the creative mind. I highly recommend it to all who want to open their minds and calm their spirits.
